In Darwin, sun protection isn't just about sunscreen. When the UV Index regularly hits extreme levels (11+), covering up with UPF 50+ rated swimwear is the smartest thing you can do in and around the water. This guide covers rash vests, sun-protective swimwear and everything you need to know about UPF ratings.

What is UPF and Why Does It Matter?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor — the rating system for fabrics (the equivalent of SPF for sunscreen). A UPF 50+ rated garment blocks 98% or more of UV radiation, compared to a standard white T-shirt which provides roughly UPF 5–7 (blocking only 80% of UV). For Darwin's conditions, UPF 50+ is the only rating worth buying.
How is UPF 50+ Achieved?
UPF 50+ garments achieve their rating through:
- Tight weave or knit construction that leaves minimal gaps for UV to pass through
- UV-absorbing dyes in the fabric
- Specialised synthetic fibres (nylon, polyester) that naturally block UV better than cotton
- Thicker fabric weight
Note: When fabric is wet and stretched, UPF can decrease. Always buy a well-fitting garment to maintain the rated protection.
Types of Rash Vests and Sun-Protective Swimwear
Short-Sleeve Rash Vest
Covers the torso and upper arms. Good for casual beach days and snorkelling. Easier to put on than long-sleeve and suitable for social beach settings.
Long-Sleeve Rash Vest
The gold standard for UV protection in the water. Covers from wrists to waist. Essential for extended snorkelling, surfing and beach days in Darwin's peak UV hours. Strongly recommended for kids.
Swim Shirts
Looser-fit alternative to the form-fitted rash vest. More comfortable for casual wear from pool to beach. Good for men who want coverage without the tight lycra look.
Long-Sleeve Swimsuit (One-Piece)
Full torso and arm coverage in a one-piece swimsuit format. Popular with women who want maximum UV protection without the two-piece combination. Excellent for reef swimming and snorkelling.
Full Wetsuit / Stinger Suit
For Darwin's wet season when marine stingers (box jellyfish) are present, a full-body lycra stinger suit provides both UV protection AND stinger protection. Essential for swimming at Darwin's beaches between October and May.
When to Wear a Rash Vest in Darwin
- Always when swimming at the beach or outdoor pools
- Especially between 10am–3pm (peak UV hours)
- Wet season (October–April): add stinger protection
- Kids: every time they're in the water outdoors
- Snorkelling at Litchfield or offshore: always long-sleeve
