Swimsuit Gaping at the Bust: What It Means & How To Fix It

If your swimsuit is gaping at the bust when you lean forward, raise your arms or get out of the water, it usually means the cup, band or torso fit isn’t quite right – not that there’s anything wrong with your shape. In this guide, the Splash team explains why one-piece swimsuits and bikini tops gape and how to fix it with better styles from our womens swimwear collections.

1. What Bust Gaping Looks Like

Bust gaping happens when there is extra space between your breast and the swimsuit fabric. You might notice a gap at the top edge of the cup, at the side near your armhole, or through the centre front. This can occur in both one-piece swimsuits and separate bikini tops.

  • When you lean forward, the top edge of the cup falls away and you can see down inside.
  • The fabric wrinkles or collapses across the bust instead of sitting smooth and supported.
  • Armholes on a one-piece or rash vest gape open at the side of the bust.

The good news: in nearly every case, gaping is a fit mismatch that can be solved by adjusting the size, switching to a different cup shape or choosing more supportive brands such as Sea Level, Artesands, Capriosca and Seafolly.

2. Main Reasons Your Swimsuit Gapes at the Bust

2.1 The Cup Is Too Big or the Wrong Shape

If your bust doesn’t completely fill the cup, the fabric can’t sit flat. This is common when you’re wearing a general S/M/L size instead of a cup-sized swimsuit, or if you have softer breast tissue after weight change, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Signs your cup is too large or the wrong shape include:

  • Wrinkling or folding across the top of the cup.
  • Gaps near the strap or armhole when you raise your arms.
  • Centre front that won’t sit against your chest in wired styles.

Try moving into a smaller cup size in our DD+ swimwear, or switch to styles with soft cups and elastic support such as Bond-Eye if you prefer a more flexible fit.

2.2 The Band or Underbust Is Too Loose

A firm underbust band anchors the whole top. If your bikini top or one-piece feels loose around the ribs, it can ride up and create gaps at the bust even when the cup volume is correct.

  • The band can be pulled several centimetres away from your body.
  • The back of your top keeps sliding up between your shoulder blades.
  • You rely on the straps to hold everything up instead of the band.

In this case, go down a band size in structured bra-style tops from Sea Level or Baku, or tighten adjustable back clips and ties so the support is coming from the band, not just the straps.

2.3 Torso Length & Strap Tension

In a one-piece swimsuit, if the torso is too long for your body, the suit can sag through the midsection, letting the bust area fall away. If the torso is too short, straps may dig in while the bust still gapes at the sides because the fabric is being pulled in the wrong direction.

Adjustable straps help you fine-tune this balance. Look for adjustable-strap swimwear or dedicated long-torso one-pieces if you struggle with both wedgies and bust gaping.

2.4 Fabric Relaxing Over Time

Chlorine, salt water and heat gradually soften swim fabric. After a few seasons, an older favourite may start to feel loose and gape at the bust even if it once fit perfectly.

If your swimmers are several summers old and have lost their snap, it’s probably time for a fresh style from our new arrivals or durable chlorine-resistant swimwear collections.

3. Swimsuit Gaping Fixes You Can Try Now

Before heading to a tailor, try these simple swimsuit gaping fixes that work for most Splash customers.

  1. Switch to cup-sized swimwear. Explore our DD+ and cup-sized swimwear where tops and one-pieces are sized by back and cup, not just S–XL.
  2. Adjust straps and bands. Tighten back clips and shoulder sliders on adjustable-strap styles so the fabric sits flush against your bust.
  3. Choose supportive cuts. Look for underwire, shelf bras and powermesh lining in brands like Sea Level, Artesands and Capriosca if you have a fuller bust.
  4. Try plunge, wrap or ruched styles for smaller busts. If you’re smaller in the bust and always get extra space at the top, styles with ruffles, ruching or wrap fronts from Seafolly and Kulani Kinis can help fill and flatter without gaping.
  5. Retire worn-out favourites. When elastic is stretched out, no amount of adjusting will remove gaping. Treat yourself to a fresh fit from our latest swimwear arrivals.

4. How To Check Bust Fit In The Change Room

When you try on swimwear at Splash (or at home), use this quick checklist:

  • Lean-forward test: Bend forward in front of the mirror. If you can see down into the cup, try a smaller cup, firmer band, or more coverage from our support swimwear.
  • Arm raise test: Lift both arms overhead. The neckline and armholes on your one-piece or bikini top should stay close to your body without obvious gaping.
  • Band test: The band should feel firm and secure, especially in underwire swimwear, without riding up your back.
  • Comfort test: You should feel supported but not squashed. If you’re spilling out or still have empty space, ask our team to try an alternative style or cup size.
