Why does some swimwear feel scratchy or stiff?
Why Does My Swimwear Feel Scratchy or Stiff?
From "crunchy" fabric to skin irritation—here is how to restore the softness to your suit.
Why does swimwear get stiff?
The most common reason swimwear feels stiff is the buildup of dried chlorine or salt crystals within the fabric fibers. If a suit isn't rinsed in fresh water immediately after use, these chemicals harden, creating a "crunchy" texture. Other causes include rough swimsuit fabric made from low-grade polyester or the use of harsh detergents that strip the fabric's natural elasticity.
The 3 Main Causes of Discomfort
1. Chemical Crystallization
Chlorine is a harsh chemical designed to break down bacteria—but it also breaks down fabric. When it dries into the suit, it locks the fibers in place. The Fix: Always "flush" your suit under cold fresh water for 60 seconds after every swim.
2. Low-Grade Polyester Blends
Budget-friendly swimwear often uses basic polyester that can feel "scratchy" against sensitive skin. Premium brands use Microfiber Nylon or Italian Lycra, which have much finer threads for a silk-like feel. The Fix: Look for "Micro-Nylon" in the product description.
3. Detergent "Build-up"
Standard laundry powders are too abrasive for swimwear. They can get trapped in the knit, making the suit feel heavy and stiff once dry. The Fix: Use a dedicated swimwear wash or a tiny drop of gentle baby shampoo.
Is your suit beyond saving?
If your swimsuit has started "shedding" little white elastic fibers (spandex breakdown), it's time for an upgrade. Once the elastic snaps, the softness cannot be restored.
